How to Prepare your Return to Uni - our Top Ten Tips
It's the final days of the end-of-year holidays.
While it's tempting to stay in scrolling mode until the last second, a little preparation now will save you stress and set you up for a smooth start to the new term.
1. Sort Out Your Accommodation
If you’ve been home for the holidays, check the campus accommodation accessibility before heading back.
Look up the campus facilities management or property management agency’s working hours in case you need to contact them with any maintenance issues like heating, water, and electricity in your flat.
Take any essentials like bedding, toiletries, or supplies back with you.
2. Check Your Timetable
Review your lecture and seminar timetable.
Check for any changes to room locations or times.
Add this information to your calendar or planner.
3. Organise Your Travel Plans
Book your train, bus, or flight tickets early to avoid price increases. (read our blog on travel tips)
Check departure times and add them to your calendar, with reminders for check-in times, if necessary.
Consider delays and leave extra time for travel in case of adverse weather conditions.
4. Update Your Study Materials
Review your notes from last term to refresh your memory.
Organise your materials by subject for easy access and back up your files.
Make a list of any books or materials you’ll need for the new term.
5. Stock Up on Essentials
Use the holidays to stock up on toiletries, stationery, and snacks.
Don’t forget cleaning supplies and laundry detergent (check out our cost-saving laundry tips).
Pack any home comforts that will make university life easier.
6. Sort Out Your Finances
Review your budget for the coming term and make any adjustments.
Check your bank account and student loan status.
Plan your spending for essentials, books, and social events.
7. Set Your Goals
Think about what you want to achieve this term.
Break your goals down into small, manageable steps.
Write them down and post them somewhere visible.
8. Reconnect with Uni Friends
Get in touch with friends and flat mates before you return.
Plan a catch-up or group study session.
Build up the excitement of seeing each other again.
9. Prepare for a Healthy Routine
Ease back into a uni-friendly sleep schedule.
Plan quick and nutritious budget-friendly meals for busy weeks.
Consider adding regular exercise to your routine.
10. Prepare Mentally
Reflect on the highs and lows of last term.
Identify areas in which you can improve and how to manage stress.
Remind yourself what it is you enjoy about university life, and why you’re doing it, to get yourself motivated.
If you are feeling inspired but don't know how to start.... go for a walk and clear your head.
Mentally prepare your priorities, and then make a list. Crossing off each task will already give you a sense of accomplishment.
If you're updating your timetable, setting goals for the term, or mentally preparing for what's coming up next, a bit of planning now can make all the difference.
You can do this! Work through each of the steps above and you'll be prepared and ready to go in no time!
